Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting
- Signs of wear for engine valve lifters include but are not limited to:
- Tapping noises from the engine
- Loss of power
- Engine misfire
- Poor engine performance
- Excessive noise in the valve train
Good Maintenance Practices
- Before purchasing and installing an engine valve lifter, make sure it is the correct size and fit for your vehicle.
- Keep the coolant level full and do not allow the engine to overheat - excessive heat could cause the lifter to expand and stick.
- Keep engine oil level full.
- Be sure that flat non-roller lifters turn in their bores at least 45 degrees in 2 crankshaft revolutions, to help prevent camshaft lobe damage.
- If a tapping sound occurs in the engine, have it checked - it could be a sign of a faulty lifter and lead to excessive damage to engine components.
- Have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible if the ‘Service Engine Soon' light illuminates.
- Have your vehicle inspected immediately if the ‘Service Engine Soon' light flashes rapidly, as this could indicate an engine misfire condition which may damage your engine and/or engine emission components.
- Regularly inspect engine valve lifter for signs of damage or wear, and replace them if signs of damage are found.
