Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting
- Indicators that there could be a problem with your vehicle's alternator are:
- Engine doesn't turn over or start
- Loss of battery power
- Some loss of electrical power (dimming headlight, etc.)
- Grinding or squeaking noise
- Alternator warning light illuminates
- Other vehicle parts that might cause related alternator problems include:
- Bad battery
- Broken, frayed, or loose drive belt
- Electrical fault
- Worn or damaged bearings
- Corroded or loose battery terminal connection
- Burned fuses or fusible links
- When making repairs on electrical systems, in-depth diagnosis is needed before parts replacement. This includes checking:
- Battery health
- Diagnostic trouble codes
- Evidence of fluid contamination
Good Maintenance Practices
- There is a cooling fan in most alternators to keep it from overheating. Making sure that the fan is clean will help the fan and alternator run properly.
- It is also important that all electrical connections are kept clean and firmly attached, which will make sure the battery is being properly charged by the alternator.
