Maintenance & Troubleshooting
Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting
- The main function of all threaded assemblies is to create and maintain clamp force. Clamp force is simply the amount of force applied to a bolted joint to keep the mated parts together without any motion between them. The most common cause for failure of threaded assemblies is when clamp force is not maintained. Threaded assemblies loosen because of gaps, vibration and side-to-side movement, and thermal expansion/contraction.
- Threaded assemblies can also fail when nuts and bolts seize together. They become extremely difficult to remove and often break when removal is attempted. Seizing is commonly caused by friction welding (galling), and corrosion and rust as a result of humidity and high temperature stress.
- Threadlockers are a great way to ensure threaded assemblies remain reliable. They help minimize loosening and corrosion and provide a more effective and longer-lasting alternative to other locking devices, such as split ring or spring washers, tooth or ribbed flanged bolts, or nylon nuts.
Good Maintenance Practices:
- The use of threadlocking products can help to overcome the limitations of mechanical fasteners. Mechanical fasteners, in most automotive applications, must be carefully torqued. Once the threadlocker hardens, it will maintain the proper amount of torque until the next disassembly. Mechanical fasteners also often loosen over time, causing automotive components to run inefficiently and eventually break down. Threadlockers provide consistent protection against shock and vibration, even in the most heavily taxed mechanical assemblies. Mechanical fasteners do not have the ability to seal out corrosive elements. Threadlockers?áseal out moisture and other contaminants and help to minimize corrosion and friction welding (galling).
- In addition to the above benefits, threadlockers are a much better solution than other locking devices, such as split ring washers. One bottle of threadlocker can be used on nearly any type of fastener, whereas other locking devices must be purchased in a variety of sizes to fit different applications.
