ACDelco 85603319 - Steering Gear Assembly without Pitman Arm

GM Original Equipment

85603319

An ACDelco GM Original Equipment Remanufactured Steering Gear converts steering wheel rotation into the side-to-side motion needed to steer your vehicle's front wheels. These steering gears are found in cars and trucks, and are a GM-recommended replacement for your vehicle's original components. Remanufacturing steering gears is an industry standard practice that involves disassembly of existing units, and replacing components that are most prone to wear with new components. Damaged and obsolete parts are replaced and are end of line tested to ensure they perform to ACDelco specifications. In addition, remanufacturing returns components back into service rather than processing as scrap or simply disposing of them. This steering gear has been manufactured to fit your GM vehicle, providing the same performance, durability, and service life you expect from General Motors.

    FAQ

Q: Is there a difference between a hydraulic and an electric power steering system?
A: Yes. Hydraulic power steering systems use a pump to send pressurized fluid to the hydraulic steering gear, where pressurized fluid assists the driver to move the steering gear. Electric power steering systems do not use fluid; instead, they use an electric motor and sensors to move the steering gear.

Q: Can I tell if my vehicle uses an electric or a hydraulic power steering system?
A: Yes. If there is a power steering pump mounted to your vehicle's engine, or your owner's manual calls for power steering fluid, then your vehicle uses a hydraulic power steering system. If your vehicle's engine does not have a power steering pump or your owner's manual indicates your vehicle does not require power steering fluid, then your vehicle uses an electric power steering system.

Q: Are there signs that can indicate my vehicle needs an alignment?
A: Yes. Uneven tire wear, vehicle pull, or an off center steering wheel may indicate that your vehicle requires an alignment.

Q: Will I be able to steer my vehicle if my power steering goes out?
A: Yes. You will be able to steer your vehicle if the power steering goes out for both hydraulic and electric power steering systems. For hydraulic power steering systems, it will require more effort, especially at lower speeds. If your vehicle has electric power steering, a 'service steering system' light will likely be apparent before it is realized that the power assist is off. If your power steering goes out, have the system inspected and repaired as soon as possible.

    Maintenance & Troubleshooting

    Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting

    • Wear in the steering gear may be indicated by excessive 'play' in the steering wheel.
      • Recirculating ball steering gears can develop on-center lash, and can be adjusted without replacing the steering gear or components.
      • Rack and pinion steering gears can develop lash in the outer and inner tie rods, and the loose part must be replaced to correct the issue.
    • Unusual noises may be caused by the steering gear or related components.
      • In hydraulic power steering systems, loud unusual noises will not be caused by the steering gear, but may be caused by other system components.
      • In electric power steering systems, unusual noises may come from the EPS rack and pinion steering gear motor, and either the motor or gear assembly will need to be replaced to correct the issue.
    • Manual diagnosis by a qualified technician is always the preferred method for diagnosing problems with power steering system components.

      Good Maintenance Practices:

      • Have your vehicle inspected if it exhibits any of the following symptoms:
        • Unusual noise when turning the steering wheel
        • A shimmy or shake in the steering wheel
        • Heavy or unresponsive steering at low speeds or during parking lot maneuvers
        • The steering wheel does not return to 'center' properly
        • The service power steering system light is lit in the driver's information center
      • For hydraulic power steering systems:
        • Check your power steering fluid levels and belts and hoses.
        • Keep in mind that wet spots/fluid stains on the ground beneath the vehicle may indicate fluid leaks, and have your vehicle inspected if fluid leaks occur.
      • If you live in areas that experience harsh winter weather, have the entire steering system inspected before winter arrives to help ensure safer driving.
        • Especially have the inner and outer tie rods inspected for grease leaks and looseness.
