Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting

  • Signs you might need to replace your fuel tank sending unit wiring harness are:
    • Breaks or cracks in the insulation jacket or outer coating of the wires causing corrosion of the core.
    • Insulation jacket is stiff or contaminated with dirt and oil.
    • Broken or spliced wires or wire core.
    • Voltage drop or loss.
    • Inaccurate fuel gauge reading.

Good Maintenance Practices

  • Visually inspect wire harness for signs of wear. You can also have the wire windings and wire harness tested by your service technician for opens, shorts, and proper factory specified resistance with an ohmmeter.
  • Terminal Installation:
    • Step 1: Align the terminal and pull the wire from the back of the connector in order to seat the terminal.
    • Step 2: If necessary, cut the new wire to proper length and splice with existing circuit.
    • Step 3: If the connector is outside of the passenger compartment, apply dielectric grease to the connector.
    • Step 4: Install the TPA, CPA and/or the secondary locks.
