Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting

  • Signs that you may be having problems with your spark plug wires or that your spark plug wires might need to be replaced are:
    • Engine cylinder misfires. This can be due to conductor wear.
    • Sluggish vehicle performance or reduced engine power, especially when going up hills or under a load.
    • Rough engine idle, engine hesitation, engine surging caused by a disruption of the normal electrical current flow.
    • Breaks or cracks in the insulation jacket or outer coating of the wires.

Good Maintenance Practices

  • Check the spark plug wires when checking or replacing your vehicle's spark plugs. Look for any cracks or tears in the insulation and the wire connections to make sure they are secure.
  • Terminal Installation:
    • Step 1: Align the terminal and pull the wire from the back of the connector in order to seat the terminal.
    • Step 2: If necessary, cut the new wire to proper length and splice with existing circuit.
    • Step 3: If the connector is outside of the passenger compartment, apply dielectric grease to the connector.
    • Step 4: Install the TPA, CPA and/or the secondary locks.
