Maintenance & Troubleshooting

Signs of Wear & Troubleshooting

  • Signs of wear for engine valve lifters include but are not limited to:
    • Tapping noises from the engine
    • Loss of power
    • Engine misfire
    • Poor engine performance
    • Excessive noise in the valve train

Good Maintenance Practices

  • Before purchasing and installing an engine valve lifter, make sure it is the correct size and fit for your vehicle.
  • Keep the coolant level full and do not allow the engine to overheat - excessive heat could cause the lifter to expand and stick.
  • Keep engine oil level full.
  • Be sure that flat non-roller lifters turn in their bores at least 45 degrees in 2 crankshaft revolutions, to help prevent camshaft lobe damage.
  • If a tapping sound occurs in the engine, have it checked - it could be a sign of a faulty lifter and lead to excessive damage to engine components.
  • Have your vehicle inspected as soon as possible if the ‘Service Engine Soon' light illuminates.
  • Have your vehicle inspected immediately if the ‘Service Engine Soon' light flashes rapidly, as this could indicate an engine misfire condition which may damage your engine and/or engine emission components.
  • Regularly inspect engine valve lifter for signs of damage or wear, and replace them if signs of damage are found.
